A Day of Balance · Thursday April 26, 2007 by Abbie

Ram was awake nice and early today, so we got straight into reading the Terry Pratchett book, Hogfather. It is interesting discussing the meaning of Christmas, and whether it is better to give or to receive. I have a feeling that by the end of the book it won’t be so clear!

The day after swimming is always a chill out day, and today Ram chose to spend most of the time on the Bionicle computer game. He is really please with his progress. After losing everything and starting again, he is doing the whole thing much more methodically, gaining a lot of extra points, and buying things in a more sensible way. For instance he has realised that it is not necessary to have all the playground items for the Paraka (if you don’t know what they are, then you shouldn’t ask!) but that it is more important to buy the 50% discount first, then buy the play equipment later if you have the credits. So i guess it has been go in teaching him some logic and discipline, and delayed gratification!

He is also getting very good at taking regular breaks and balancing working on the computer with other things. He is still finding that his legs are hurting from the extra walking on the weekend though, so we didn’t do anything like badminton outside. It was also a bit of a rainy grey day at times. Luckily he has the trapeze indoors so that he can still get some exercise.

During my power nap he chose to read his Bionicle book. He was really proud and when I came down stairs he told me all about what he read. Interestingly, he had to have something on the TV at the same time while I was upstairs. He will happily read to himself if I am in the room with him, but is really not happy about it if I am not. He really can’t cope well on his own yet.

Food was a bit different today. He decided at the fruit and veg shop that he wanted some green grapes for a change. So today he had a bowl of grapes on his desk that he dipped into. It takes along time for him to eat a grape. He sticks it in his mouth, and sucks it for about 30 minutes until it starts to break apart! Then for lunch he wanted sorrel. Not in a salad, or a sandwich, or in pita bread or anything else, just a huge bowl of plain sorrel picked fresh from the garden!

They say that children left to their own devises and presented with a health range of food will choose a healthy well balance diet. I guess most adults would think that it would be balance each day, but when we have days like this where he eats only fruit and vegetables, I realise that for Ram it is balanced over the space of a month!

So, balanced diet, balanced computer/reading/exercise. What more could a home educating mum want. Maybe someone to do the dishes?
