Dog bite day · Friday March 23, 2007 by Lily

This morning, a set of Adult Numeracy papers I had ordered yesterday from CGP arrived. They have an excellent on-line ordering service, I know it used to be even better when they gave us the school discount but to order by 5pm and have them delivered free of charge the next morning is still great. They do give a discount for larger orders too. They look as though they’ll be very useful; lots of practical questions.

Rupert did a little more Maths with dh in the morning and his music practice, then after lunch I took over. We looked at the human skeleton using This Website If you scroll down to Teaching resources, you can print off a full size human skeleton. A book I really like using is “Start Exploring Gray’s Anatomy.” We then watched a Science video, one of many I recorded from the BBC Learning Zone. There are lots of GCSE Bitesize programmes starting next week. I’m hoping to fill in some Science gaps using videos, websites and books. Ds was going to sit the first new AQA GCSE Science exams in June, but sadly his on-line tutor was taken ill, so we had to cancel his exam entry because of the difficulty with coursework. He has covered more than what was required for Chemistry and was part of the way through Biology. I would like to complete the Biology and then cover Physics in a broader and deeper way, as R has decided to take GCSE Physics alone next year. He dosn’t really enjoy the Chem and Biol which is sad for me as Biology is my subject and I love it. We have a set of boxes from Electronic Wizards Apprenticeship to use.

After tea, R went to “South Cheshire Youth Sinfonia,” a strings group run by his violin teacher. We were very pleased when she asked him to join and he has progressed over 3 or 4 years from the back of the third violins to the second desk of the first violins. They rehearse for an hour on a Friday evening at a school just around the corner from us. At first he didn’t enjoy going. He’d done several music workshops that his teacher organised, with varying degrees of success. There was one occassion when I went along too with my ‘cello and he became so distressed we left at lunch-time. However, the Sinfonia really took off for him when he went to play with them in the “Youth Presents Music” competition organised by the Rotary Club at the Royal Northern College of Music. He went for the day on a coach and made friends with the other young players that previously he’d only met at the hour long Friday night sessions. They are competing there again at the beginning of April, and next week are giving a concert at a local church.

Dog bite? Well he was bitten on the leg by a dog on the way to the rehearsal today. Fortunately he had on a pair of thick trousers or it would have been much worse than the 4 puncture wounds he sustained.
